Is this the most secure, most efficient data centre in the world
Deep inside the Mountains on the island of Rennesøy NATO built a large, high security ammunition store for the North Atlantic fleet. A 100 m long upward sloping access tunnel leads to the large concrete buildings that were constructed inside the mountian.
When NATO left the Norwegian site 4 years ago the Smedvig Office family Investment company started the planning to refit the entire site into a high security data centre, located on the shores of the island of Rennesøy, with concrete buildings deep within the caves carved out of the mountain.

Green Mountain offers:- security, reliable power, A remarkably low PUE, low cost readily available cooling, low fire risk,
The fashion for building in the Northern hemisphere, Norway, Iceland and Sweden has eliminated the high cost of electricity to power chillers, but added to this using hydro-electric power, and water -cooling, the data-centre is able to eliminate two major problems.
Built into the ready made ammunition hideaway, with 22,000 square metres available for the racks of servers which will now fill the underground halls that once stored ammunition for NATO. This data-centre has probably the world’s lowest PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness ) rating and with a practically non-existent carbon footprint. The building, housed inside a mountain on an island in a fjord, was for many years kept secret during the cold war but is now missile and mine free. Security is also up to NATO standards.

Ex-NATO Bunker DataCentre
A new Project in Norway is utilising an ex NATO bunker Green Mountain
Gartner report confirms, relocating to Green Mountain could save 50% of Data Centre OPEX. The data centre(s) have virtually zero carbon emissions and are cooled using “free cooling” provided by nearby fjord and waterways.
A report by issued by Gartner explains that companies could cut Operational Expenses (OPEX) significantly by locating some of their IT in the Nordics where power costs are significantly lower than in UK and other European countries
Electric power in Norway costs about 40-50% of that of the UK and there is an over capacity of supply from zero carbon emission hydro power stations. As a consequence power pricing is predicted to continue to fall in Norway. In addition there are no CRC or other carbon taxes, and furthermore power pricing can be fixed for up to 10 years. This provides for predictable OPEX of an element that can cost between 40-80% of the Data Centre OPEX in other regions.

Benefits and Advantages of a Modular Data Centre
Benefits and Advantages of a Modular Data Centre include:
•Flexible and scalable design: The modular data centre incorporates a snap-together design with a removable wall design. With the economies of scale and the benefits of repeatable, standardised modules, it is easy to match demand and scale infrastructure quickly. Modules can be added when extra capacity is required or scaled down when infrastructure becomes obsolete.

French fibre in the DRC
French telecommunications giant Orange and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed a ‘strategic’ deal, which will see the France-based company take control of the country’s optic fibre platform and manage it through a long term lease, and therefore serve Orange DRC subscribers with a high speed internet connection.
Orange, who launched its mobile operations in DRC in December 2012, is said to boast some three million subscribers in this mineral-rich Central African nation of 75 million people.
The signing ceremony took place in Kinshasa and was overseen by the country’s minister of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, Kin-Kiey Mulumba.
Mulumba said signing the deal with Orange helped to correct the ‘anomaly’ and give the mobile operator the legal means to compete fairly with its rivals.

Bringing the World Wide Web to Zambia
What could be the most advanced communications technology in the world was showcased in Lusaka this week as Chinese communications equipment giant Huawei Technologies welcomed its “Connected Possibilities – Make it Possible” demonstration truck to Zambia.
Yamfwa Mukanga the Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications officially launched the Zambia leg of the company’s road-show, in which the vehicles travel thousands of miles across the continent to exhibit the latest state-of-the art information and communications technology (ICT) equipment.
Mr Mukanga expressed that by harnessing this technology – and encouraging others to do so – his government knows that it will help Zambia achieve the middle-income status by 2030. That will in turn bring prosperity, employment and transform the quality of life for all citizens. They need to turn these possibilities into reality in order to keep ahead of the game. Technology is changing fast and Zambia can leap frog ahead of it other African nations by embracing new technology. For this reason it is vital that they all learn from the latest technology trend brought by Huawei.
